CONSUMER BEWARE , THERE IS A NEW POSTAL SCAM THAT HAS LOCAL PEOPLE THINKING IT IS A LEGITIMATE OPPORTUNITY!!!!
The scammer will either place an ad in a legitimate classified listing, online or in print, or they will collect their victim’s names and email addresses off of resumes posted online. Some of them are even making “copy cat” websites of legitimate Secret Shopper companies to use in their scam to help convince the victim that this is all legitimate. For a listing of legitimate Secret Shopper companies, go to http://www.mysteryshop.org/
The victim will be told that they have been hired as a Secret Shopper and will be sent a cashier’s check or money order to cash and use on their assignments. One of the assignments is to review the service at a Western Union or Money Gram location. They are given a name and address to wire money to, from the check that was sent to them, and told to fill out an evaluation form on the service received and email or fax that back to the company they are working for.
Everything seems fine, and some victims may even complete a few “assignments” before the check is discovered to be counterfeit. On average, it takes about 10 business days for the bank to realize that the check is counterfeit, but we have seen some cases where it has taken over 6 months. Once the bank dose find that the check is counterfeit, they will contact you demanding the return of the money and deduct the full amount of the check from your bank account. This sometimes leaves the victims with negative bank accounts. If you have received

LYRID METEOR SHOWER
Skywatchers are in for a treat in late April: An annual meteor shower will peak when the moon's absence leaves the night sky dark and great for viewing.
The Lyrid meteor shower peaks overnight from April 21 to April 22, with the best observing coming between midnight and dawn on the 22nd local time, experts say. The moon will be new at this time, so the Lyrids' bright flashes won't be drowned out by the glare of Earth's nearest neighbor.
The Lyrids will be visible all over the world. NASA officials estimate a maximum meteor rate of about 15 per hour, but the number could be higher or lower than this. The Lyrids are quite unpredictable, with maximum rates ranging from 10 to 100 meteors per hour over the years.

The competition presented in partnership with the Arkansas Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. At Oden High School students recited works they selected from an anthology of more than 600 classic and contemporary poems. Judges evaluated student performances on these criteria: articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty and accuracy. The state champion competes in Washington, DC for a $20,000 scholarship.

Waldron man draws 15 years in prison in firebombing incident Apr 10, 2012
The U.S. Department of Justice today announced last week that Gary Dodson, 33, of Waldron, was sentenced in Little Rock for his involvement in the January 2011 firebombing the residence of an interracial couple in Hardy. The incident took place during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. On Dec. 7, 2011, Dodson pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the civil rights, criminal interference with housing rights due to race and possession of an unregistered firearm/destructive device.District Judge Billy Roy Wilson today sentenced Dodson to 15 years in prison and 3 years of supervised release for the three counts of conviction.Dodson was turned over to the Federal Marshal’s custody and was taken the Pulaski County Jail in Little Rock, where he is currently being held During his plea, Dodson admitted that on the night of Jan. 14, 2011, he attended a party in Evening Shade. Ark. where he and three other men — Jake Murphy, 19, of Waldron; Dustin Hammond, 20, of Hardy; and Jason Barnwell, 37, of Evening Shade — devised a plan to firebomb the victims’ house Dodson that night drove the other men to purchase gas for the firebomb and then Dodson drove everyone to the victims’ house in Hardy. When they arrived, Barnwell, Murphy and Hammond constructed three Molotov cocktails and threw them at the house. They damaged the victims’ house; however, no one was injured. The couple was also barraged with racial slurs and threatened with future violence if they did not leave Arkansas. Each of the four initially was charged with one count of conspiracy to interfere with the housing rights of another, one count of interfering with the housing rights of another, one count of possessing an unregistered firearm, one count of using fire in the commission of a felony, and one count of using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence.Barnwell is also charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm.

SEE VIDEO BELOW

SOLAR DESIGN WINNER
Mena Middle School EAST student Jodeci Ingloglia received 2nd Prize Junior Division and $200 cash for his entry in the ASSET Initiative - Solar Design Competition at the EAST Conference March 14, 2012.
The purpose of this project competition was to design and construct a functional, model greenhouse and explain how the design can benefit a community. Jodeci, 7th grade MMS EAST student, designed a greenhouse using a fish tank model in Google SketchUp. "I took an old fish tank and rigged a wire to a light bulb and put dirt in the bottom of the tank where you plant the seeds. I created a model of a storeable green house that will save people money and fit in any apartment or small space so people will get free food and the extra money saved can be spent on their bills and things like that."
With the cost of food going up many families are struggling to buy groceries. Some have begun to reach back into our nation’s farming roots by growing their own produce, but not everyone has a yard big enough to grow food.
ASSET Initiative (a National Science Foundation EPSCoR project administered by the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority) asked EAST students to design and construct miniature greenhouses that families can use to grow food at home year-round. Jodeci had to take in to consideration that some families live in apartments, some families have yards but don’t have good access to natural light. It also had to be space efficient, cost-effective, productive and earth-friendly. Thanks to generous EAST supporters, each year several thousand dollars worth of software, services and awards are given to outstanding student projects and EAST programs. By sponsoring and hosting an Application Showcase, these supporters help demonstrate the incredible skills that EAST students possess and the impact they make on their communities.
