1 MILLION DOLLAR LOTTO TICKET FOUND IN TRASH
The life of a losing lottery ticket - thrown away and forgotten until someone realizes the loser is actually a winner.Someone bought a $1 million dollar scratch off ticket at the Super 1 Stop in Beebe back in July.Whoever bought it tossed it in the trash - and that's where all the controversy starts.Sharon Jones and her husband are million dollar winners after finding a discarded ticket in this trash can. But Lisa Petriches, the manager at the Super 1 Stop sued in White County circuit court, saying she should get the money.According to the lawsuit losing lottery tickets go into a trash can labeled "do not take", for a shot at a second chance drawing. The ticket in question hadn't been completely scratched and turned out to be a $1 million winner. It's a million dollar ticket -with almost as many opinions."I don't think the store has any right to it," says Linda Schneider."If it's clearly marked, then it should go back to the store," adds J.D. Goldman. "’Do not take’ means ‘do not take.’"Now, the smiling couple can't spend their winnings until the legal fight for the left behind lotto ticket gets resolved. Their attorney filed a motion to dismiss the case late this afternoon, saying the "do not take" sign on the trash can didn't show up until after his client pulled the winning ticket out of the trash. The lawsuit argues the trash can is the property of the store manager, and that the Jones couple committed fraud by taking the ticket out of the trash. The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery did not respond to a request for comment.A judge has ordered Jones to not spend the prize money until the case is resolved.

WHO WILL FIND THE 30,000TH DIAMOND
Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro is set to celebrate two big milestones this year. March 15th marks 40 years since the site’s creation as an Arkansas state park... and sometime soon, the 30,000th diamond found since the park’s opening will be unearthed. The latest count of diamonds found at the park is 29,934 -- just 66 short of 30,000. The park plans to commemorate the find.Last year, 106,524 people visited Crater of Diamonds State Park. It was a record year for diamond finds, with more than 500 dug up by visitors. 30 of those diamonds were over one carat in weight. The search area at the park is a 37 1/2 acre plowed field on the eroded surface of the eighth largest diamond-bearing deposit in the world (in surface area). Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world’s only diamond-producing site open to the public.Crater of Diamonds State Park is located two miles southeast of downtown Murfreesboro. For more information contact Justin Dorsey, park superintendent, Crater of Diamonds State Park, at 870-285-3113, or email him at justin.dorsey@arkansas.gov. Newly discovered asteroid to make surprisingly close zip past Earth
January 27, 2012 – SPACE
– An asteroid will pass by the Earth on Friday in something of a cosmic near-miss, making its closest approach at about 1600 GMT. The asteroid, estimated to be about 11m (36ft) in diameter, was first detected on Wednesday. At its closest, the space rock – named 2012 BX34 – will pass within about 60,000km of Earth – less than a fifth of the distance to the Moon. Astronomers stress that there is no cause for concern. “It’s one of the closest approaches recorded,” said Gareth Williams, associate director of the US-based Minor Planet Center. “It makes it in to the top 20 closest approaches,
but it’s sufficiently far away… that there’s absolutely no chance of it hitting
us,” he told the BBC. The asteroid’s path makes it the closest space-rock to
pass by the Earth since object 2011 MD in June 2011. Earlier estimates put the
asteroid’s closest distance at as little as 20,000km, near the distance at which geostationary satellites reside, but observations by observatories overnight showed it will pass at a more comfortable distance. Although the asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, Dr Williams said that keen backyard astronomers could get a look

MASSIVE SOLAR FLARE
NASA is calling the recent solar flare thebiggest radiation storm since
2005. The Earth-directed coronal mass ejection, a M8.7 class flare, erupted on
January 22nd, 2012 and is projected to start hitting Earth today (NASA). The radiation is
very dispersed, so it is expected to hang around for at least the next three
days. The projected matter is referred to as solar energetic particles.
A solar flare is caused by “burst of radiation coming from the release of
magnetic energy associated with sunspots.” A CME (coronal mass ejection) is a
bit more complex and serious: “Alarge CME can contain a billion tons of matter
that can be accelerated to several million miles per hour in a spectacular
explosion. Solar material streams out through the interplanetary medium,
impacting any planet or spacecraft in its path. CMEs are sometimes associated
with flares but can occur independently.”(NASA)

DEADLY SHOOTING
_
A TEENAGER IN THE ARKANSAS
OZARKS TURNED HIMSELF IN SUNDAY SAYING HE HAD SHOT HIS 16-YEAR-OLD SISTER, “HE CAME IN ... SAYING
HE NEEDED TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE HE HAD KILLED HIS SISTER,” FRANKLIN SHERIFF ANTHONY BOEN SAID OF THE 15-YEAR-OLD. DEPUTIES FOUND
THE SISTER SHOT DEAD IN HER BEDROOM, BUT HAVE NOT YET REVEALED A
MOTIVE IN THE SHOOTING. “WE CONFISCATED SEVERAL WEAPONS FROM THE
HOME AND THE VEHICLE,” BOEN SAID. “HE WAS AN AVID HUNTER, AND HIS
FATHER WAS AN AVID HUNTER, SO THEY HAD SEVERAL GUNS IN THE HOME.”
HUNTING FOR DIAMONDS IN ARKANSAS
_
You might find it quite surprising to learn there are diamond mines in Arkansas, let alone ones where you can keep anything you find. Until 2002, there was a commercial diamond mine on the borders of Colorado and Wyoming. Today there is only one diamond mine in the United States, and that is in Crater of Diamonds State Park near Murfreesboro. Of all the state attractions, this is the only place where you can combine diamonds with trout fishing. This is the region known as the Diamond Lakes Region, with all the outdoor activities you might expect of lake tourism.
Unique geologic conditions in this region led people to believe there might be diamond mines in Arkansas when the precious stones were found in similar peridotte soil in Kimberly, South Africa in the 1870s. The state geologist made an unsuccessful search in 1889, but the first stone was not found in what is now Crater of Diamonds State Park until 1906 by the owner of the land, John Welsley Huddleston. These were sent to a Little Rock jeweler who declared them genuine fine grade stones. He sold his land for only $36,000 and died a pauper. But his memory is kept alive by a historical marker marking the site of the first find, and by one of the state's events in the annual June Huddleston Day. The Crater of Diamonds State Park has changed hands several times over the years and several unsuccessful attempts have been made at commercial mining. The mine was operated privately, and as a tourist attraction from 1952 to 1972. In 1972, the State of Arkansas purchased the site for development as a state park.
The site of these Arkansas diamond mines is the only one in the world where the public can search for diamonds and keep any that they find. Prospecting visitors pay a small daily fee to search the eroded surface of an ancient gem-bearing volcanic "pipe" that is now a 37-acre field and is periodically plowed. The Arkansas diamond mines staff will provide free identification and certification of stones. Historical structures, old mining equipment, washing pavilions, and sun shelters are located on the field. Diamond mining tools are available for rent or purchase. To locate your Arkansas diamond mines treasure, you can use any tool without a battery, motor, or wheels that can be used to transport your haul. Visitors use everything from garden tools and kitchen utensils to their bare hands.
Will Crater of Diamonds State Park make you a fortune? Probably not, but there have been some exciting finds among the 20,000 or so stones thus far recovered. Three stones were particularly noteworthy, weighing in at 17.86 carats (1917), 20.25 carats (1921), and the record-setting Uncle Sam Diamond, a brilliant 40.23 carats (1924). About ten percent of the overall swag yields gem-quality stones. Even the industrial-grade stones usually have an attractive natural luster in the rough. Experts declared the gems at least as brilliant and valuable as those produced in South Africa or South America. Most of the stones found at these diamond mines in Arkansas are too small to be cut, and remain as fascinating souvenirs of your Arkansas vacations.
Crater of Diamonds State Park is open every day throughout the year, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Numerous nearby attractions in the region make this vacation destination. There are nearly 60 camping sites in the park. There is a nearby water park, fishing in the Little Missouri River, and hiking trails that are partially wheelchair accessible.

STRANGE YET TRUE
_This has to be the weirdest thing that ever
floated by me on the river. They were stuck together in death lock, each wanting to
kill the other first.
My guess is that the falcon snatched up the tasty snake, and it somehow got its tail around the falcons’ neck, strangling it in midair causing both of them to crash into the comal river. They are both alive and well, considering. I think a few more minutes and the snake would have won. The tail was actually tied in a knot around the neck, and getting tighter by the second. I got the snake untied, and well, as you can see, they both made it. This is another one of those stories you tell, and are always acknowledged with "yeah, right!" Well, heres the proof. Neither of them bit me or scratched me, the snake didnt want to stop biting the falcons leg, and only let go after I had untied everything else. I got the water out of the falcons lungs with birdie inversion technique, and stayed with him until he was almost dried off in the sun, and flying a little. Ball of snake and falcon, that is the weirdest thing I have pulled out of the water so far, it beats the wagon wheel! SENT IN BY JIM NEUGENT |
