SOLES4SOULS
Mena Middle School EAST students collected over 250 pairs of shoes in their Soles4Souls shoe drive project. They are helping states that were hit by The tornados across America last month as well as hundreds of countries globally. After finding out that Soles4Souls was also the national service project for FCCLA, both groups collaborated and the Mena FCCLA delivered the shoes to their state convention in Conway, AR. Mena donated over 10% of The total shoes collected at the convention. Pictured: MMS 8th grade EAST students Mike Medford and Caleigh Talamantez packing up the shoes.
Mena Middle School EAST receives Superior rating at National EAST Partnership Conference
The students designed a Booth, Presentation, and prepared a Conference Program Overview as a snapshot for the judge's view on how well each program is impacting its community.
Students representing Mena Middle School were: Elizabeth Baker, Macy Brotherton, Brooke Hines, Payson Law, Lexi Brooks, McKinzy McGee, Zak Terwilliger, Ryan Thomas, and Kaylyn Wells. The students are facilitated by Tyra Hobson. The theme this year was “Innovation Generation”. McKinzy McGee and Ryan Thomas presented to the judges. The students highlighted the projects that they have worked on this year, such as the Homecoming Corsages, Christmas Joy, Yearbook, Soles4Souls, and numerous others. The EAST Conference is an annual gathering of over 2000 EAST students, teachers, parents, community and business leaders from more than 100 communities across America.
The Conference spans 3 days and includes an exhibition hall showcasing student service projects, breakout sessions on the latest in technology, an awards banquet, and much more!
The students participated in training sessions with topics including stop motion animation, CAD, GPS and GIS, digital photography, Adobe Creative Suite, and Augmented and Virtual Reality.
“A Moment in Time” was shared at the conference. It is the emotional account beginning the day of the April 9, 2009 tornado and documents the changes MMS went through until we returned back to Mena in our new school. We received a $10,000 upgrade grant this year.
Students researched what would be most beneficial to the classroom, school, and community and decided on virtual and augmented reality software. Payson Law is creating a virtual tour of our school for a new student orientation tool and to assist in planning for school safety procedures and evacuation plans. EAST Students have used the augmented reality to teach lessons in our science classes on the human body and the solar system. Ryan Thomas has created a 3D model of our school and placed it in the 3D Warehouse in Google. He is communicating with Google because is difficult to place items in our area in Google Earth because of our terrain. Our National Service Project this year was Energy Education. The purpose of Energy Education is to lower our community’s energy bills and raise awareness of living more energy efficient. We worked with Rich Mountain Electric Coop and are educating the community on how to conserve energy and money by using the Home Energy Suite link on the Rich Mountain Electric Coop’s website.
Movie Night at the Rich Mountain Nursing home has probably made the largest impact on our students. We served popcorn, cokes, candy, and cookies while watching The Help.
Other school projects that these EAST students have worked on this year are QR codes in the classroom, and Elizabeth Baker has created a Bearcat App that can be downloaded on any android smartphone. EAST, which stands for Environmental and Spatial Technology, is based on the belief that students can go well beyond what has ever been expected when given the proper learning atmosphere, appropriate tools and resources, access to real-world problems and support. EAST is a vibrant class that stresses real world application to the traditional school learning. The class is structured around students taking on specific projects that can help their schools and communities. SOLAR DESIGN WINNER
Mena Middle School EAST student Jodeci Ingloglia received 2nd Prize Junior Division and $200 cash for his entry in the ASSET Initiative - Solar Design Competition at the EAST Conference March 14, 2012.
The purpose of this project competition was to design and construct a functional, model greenhouse and explain how the design can benefit a community. Jodeci, 7th grade MMS EAST student, designed a greenhouse using a fish tank model in Google SketchUp. "I took an old fish tank and rigged a wire to a light bulb and put dirt in the bottom of the tank where you plant the seeds. I created a model of a storeable green house that will save people money and fit in any apartment or small space so people will get free food and the extra money saved can be spent on their bills and things like that." With the cost of food going up many families are struggling to buy groceries. Some have begun to reach back into our nation’s farming roots by growing their own produce, but not everyone has a yard big enough to grow food.
ASSET Initiative (a National Science Foundation EPSCoR project administered by the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority) asked EAST students to design and construct miniature greenhouses that families can use to grow food at home year-round. Jodeci had to take in to consideration that some families live in apartments, some families have yards but don’t have good access to natural light. It also had to be space efficient, cost-effective, productive and earth-friendly. Thanks to generous EAST supporters, each year several thousand dollars worth of software, services and awards are given to outstanding student projects and EAST programs. By sponsoring and hosting an Application Showcase, these supporters help demonstrate the incredible skills that EAST students possess and the impact they make on their communities.

Students researched what would be most beneficial to the classroom, school, and community and decided on virtual and augmented reality software. Payson Law is creating a virtual tour of our school for a new student orientation tool and to assist in planning for school safety procedures and evacuation plans. The purpose of Energy Education is to lower our community’s energy bills and raise awareness of living more energy efficient. Mena Middle School EAST students receive a superior rating at the 2012 National EAST Partnership Conference at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
ZERO TOLERANCE FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING CAMPAIGN
LITTLE ROCK – Beginning this week the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office will join state, county and city law enforcement agencies to increase the number of sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols on state highways and local streets and roads.State Troopers, sheriff’s deputies and police officers across the state will ramp-up their efforts to identify and arrest drunk drivers of all ages, but with a special emphasis directed toward impaired teenage drivers. The 20-day special enforcement operation will begin on April 13th - 22nd.The campaign purposely coincides with the spring season when many teenagers are on school breaks, celebrating proms and attending graduation parties.A DUI conviction for an individual under the age of 21 can result in the loss of driving privileges, fines of up to $2,000, along with required community service. A teenage convicted of DWI faces the same criminal penalties as an adult which includes jail sentencing, fines and court costs, license suspension, community service and possibly other punishments. Insurance premiums for anyone convicted DUI or DWI typically increases significantly. The objective in the coming weeks is to raise awareness of the serious and deadly consequences of impaired driving for teenagers through heightened law enforcement programs and paid media campaigns. The overall message is one of deterrence, designed to make teens think twice about drinking and driving, risking their lives as well as those of other motorists.“The bottom line is that underage drinking is illegal,” said Colonel Howard, “and if teens drive impaired, we will find them and arrest them. Where public safety is concerned, there is no room for exceptions to the law.”More information relating to the prevention of underage drinking can be foundTrafficSafetyMarketing.gov or contact the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office at (501) 618-8136.

Sun unleashes X-5 Class solar flare
Major Solar Flare: Big sunspot AR1429 has unleashed another major flare. This one is the strongest yet, an X5-class eruption on March 7th at 00:28 UT. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme UV flash: This eruption hurled a bright CME into space, shown here in a movie from the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Although the CME is not squarely Earth-directed, it appears direct enough to deliver a glancing blow to our planet’s magnetic field on March 8-9. This would add to the magnetic unrest already underway at high latitudes. The flare also accelerated energetic protons toward Earth, triggering an S3-class solar radiation storm, in progress. Such a storm is mainly a nuisance to satellites, causing occasional reboots of onboard computers and adding noise to imaging systems
1A STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
The Acorn Lady Tigers played their first State Tournament game Tuesday, February 28th versus Midland at SAU in Magnolia. The Acorn Lady Tigers came away with a win in a hard fought game 74-72 to advance to a game Friday at 1pm versus Mt Vernon-Enola a winner over Weiner 53-52 in overtime. The Acorn Lady Tigers continued their winning sweep in the State Tournament by beating Mt Vernon-Enola by the score of 59-48 in a Quarter-final game. With the win the Acorn Lady Tigers advanced to a Semi-final game Saturday, March 3rd against Kingston a 42-41 winner over the Wickes Lady Warriors Friday.
IT WAS CLOSE FOR THE MOST PART THROUGH THE ENTIRE GAME BETWEEN THE ACORN LADY TIGERS AND KINGSTON GIRLS SATURDAY(MARCH 3RD) NIGHT IN THEIR 1A STATE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL GAME. ACORN LED 10-7 AT THE END OF THE 1ST QUARTER, WHILE KINGSTON LED AT THE HALF 19-17.
IT WAS CLOSE AT THE END OF THE THIRD QUARTER WITH KINGSTON LEADING 30-29. WHEN FOULS WERE CALLED ON KINGSTON THE ACORN LADY TIGERS FREE THROW SHOOTING WAS NOT AS GOOD AS IT USUALLY IS IN THE 2ND HALF. THIS IN PART LED TO THE KINGSTON WIN AT THE END 42-41.
IT ALSO DID NOT HELP THAT ABBY JACKSON FOULED OUT OF THE GAME. THE TANDEM OF ABBY AND JASMINE WAS MISSING FOR A GOOD PART OF THE 4TH QUARTER. JASMINE JACKSON TOOK A SHOT WITH 2 SECONDS LEFT ON THE CLOCK AND MISSED. IT APPEARED JASMINE WAS FOULED TO OUR PLAY BY PLAY MAN, BUT NO FOUL WAS CALLED. THUS ENDED THE GAME.
JASMINE JACKSON LED THE ACORN LADY TIGER SCORERS WITH 20 POINTS. HERE SISTER ABBY HAD 12 POINTS. TIFFANY BAYNE HAD 6 POINTS AND TIMMERY ADAMS HAD 2 POINTS WHILE PAGE LOONEY ADDED A FREE THROW.

Even though they fell to Kirby they were very proud to take home the title of runner up in district this year. The Ladies had an outstanding season only losing one game in regular season play. Mars will make a close approach to Earth Saturday (March 3), and interested
skywatchers can follow the action live online.
Every 26 months, the orbits of Earth and Mars align such that the two planets form a relatively straight line with the sun. This cosmic event is called an
opposition, because the Red Planet sits on the exact opposite side of Earth from
the sun. Mars will be in opposition to Earth Saturday, and it will be visible even to
stargazers under the cloudiest of skies. That's because the online Slooh Space
Camera will broadcast a free, real-time feed of the Mars opposition, beginning
at 11:00 p.m. EST (0400 GMT on March 4).
Slooh will provide footage from multiple observatories around the world,
including Arizona and the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. (JUST CLICK THE PICTURE TO THE LEFT TO SEE IT LIVE)
