ECLIPSE OF SUN
Skywatchers in the western United States should circle Sunday (May 20) on their calendars. That's when a solar eclipse will block out most of the sun, leaving a spectacular "ring of fire" shining in the sky for observers located along the eclipse's path. The event is what's known as an annular solar eclipse -- from the Latin "annulus," meaning "little ring" -- and its full glory should be visible from much of Asia, the Pacific region and some of western North America, weather permitting. At its peak, the eclipse will block about 94 percent of the sun's light.
Other parts of the United States and Canada will still see a partial solar eclipse, without being treated to the ring of fire effect, though the East Coast will miss the event since the sun will have set before it begins. The eclipse will occur in the late afternoon or early evening of May 20 throughout North America, and May 21 for observers in Asia. Check out this eclipse skywatching guide to learn more about viewing locations and times.
Solar eclipses occur when the moon comes between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on our planet. When the moon lines up perfectly with the sun and blots out all of its light, the result is a total eclipse. Partial eclipses cover only part of the sun's face. [Annular Solar Eclipse of May 20, 2012 (Photo Guide)]
Annular eclipses are similar to total eclipses in that the moon lines up with the sun dead-on. But in this case, the moon is close to apogee -- the farthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit around our planet -- so it's a smidge too small in the sky to cover the solar disk completely. As a result, a ring of bright sunlight will still blaze around the moon's circumference.
Like other types of solar eclipses, annular eclipses are spectacular but potentially dangerous skywatching events. Care must be taken to observe them properly, or serious and permanent eye damage -- including blindness -- could result.
Warning: Never look directly at the sun, either with the naked eye or through telescopes or binoculars without the proper filters.

Korean War POW's remains return to U.S. 61 years after his death
It was called a “police action” at the time. It lasted three years and one month. It was the Korean War. Over 30,000 US troops were killed in the “Forgotten War.”
One of those men was Master Sergeant Elwood Green of Norman, Arkansas. He had one child, a daughter. Her name is Josie Tibbitts. “I was a month old when my father was deployed to Korea. I have pictures, I have stories, that’s it.”
In many ways the Korean War continued for Josie Tibbitts, for her father Elwood was listed as MIA, missing in action, until now. “A gentleman came up to them, a villager, and said there are some remains over here you need to take a look.”
On occasion Communist North Korea will release the remains of US servicemen. “It was absolutely fantastic news,” says Tibbitts upon hearing of her father’s remains being found.
She also heard about her dad dying in a place called Death Valley, an infamous POW camp. “I just went cold all over. Immediately started shaking, my teeth were rattling, and then I started crying uncontrollably.”
Finally, she will say hello, and then goodbye, to her dad. Master Sergeant Elwood Green’s remains will be in his home state next week for burial. “Welcome home, daddy. I love you. I’m glad you’re home, and I miss you,” A teary-eyed Tibbitts says she’ll say.
Josie Tibbitts says she didn’t have a daddy before, but she has one now.

AMERICAN IDOL COUNTRY SINGER SKYLAR LAINE SENT HOME
Last season's "American Idol" saw two country singers consistently rise above their competitors en route to the top two and the show's finale. Unfortunately for Skylar Laine, "Idol" voters weren't looking for a second straight twanged-out finale.
Skylar, the 18-year-old spark plug who's been compared to genre heavyweights Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert during her tenure on the show, was sent home Thursday night (May 3) after accruing the lowest number of votes, finishing in fifth place on "Idol"'s 11th season. Hollie Cavanagh, who had her most acclaimed week on the show yet with her commanding performances, joined Skylar in the bottom two.
The country singer-songwriter's elimination comes as a small surprise, given "Idol" viewers' general taste for country artists and the fact that the Mississippi native hadn't really had a bad week on the show. It was Skylar's third week in the group of lowest vote-getters and second in a row, her rocked-out rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" and her Broadway/Vegas treatment of Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" apparently not connecting with this week's voters.
Or maybe voters were drawn away by the strangeness of that couple just kind of chilling onstage on that park bench during the latter performance. Perhaps they weren't in it to win it, Ryan.
Whatever the reason, Skylar certainly went out with a bang, giving viewers probably the best send-off performance of the year with her fiery rendition of Lambert's "Gunpowder and Lead." I always said I was most impressed with Skylar when she had a performance that sounded authentic and as though it could be on the radio the very next day, which is exactly what she exudes whenever performing this and many other country songs.
In other words, don't feel too bad for Skylar Laine. In fact, I'm willing to bet that of the top 10 of this season, she'll be the first to notch multiple chart-placed songs in her respective genre. She's got a definite future. After all, Kellie Pickler certainly didn't win "Idol."

.EXTRA BRIGHT SUPERMOON SATURDAY
Skywatchers take note: The biggest full moon of the year is due to arrive this weekend.
The moon will officially become full Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT. And because this month's full moon coincides with the moon's perigee — its closest approach to Earth — it will also be the year's biggest.
The moon will swing in 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) from our planet, offering skywatchers a spectacular view of an extra-big, extra-bright moon, nicknamed a supermoon.
And not only does the moon's perigee coincide with full moon this month, but this perigee will be the nearest to Earth of any this year, as the distance of the moon's close approach varies by about 3 percent, This happens because the moon's orbit is not perfectly circular.
