Laverne Rushing Waller age 73, of Grannis, Arkansas passed away November 29, 2011 in Ft. Smith.

She was born February 4, 1938 in Wickes, Arkansas to the late John Truly Wilcher and the late Ferrie Meyers Wilcher. She was united in marriage to the Thomas Edward Rushing until his passing, and then to the late Thomas Lee Waller. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith. Mrs. Waller was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

She is survived by:

Son: Arland Rushing and wife Donna of Alma, Arkansas

Daughters: Fonda Everhart of Euless, Texas Karen Wall of Grannis, Arkansas

Brother: Robert Lee Wilcher of DeQueen, Arkansas

Sister: Lavada Price of Wickes, Arkansas

8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren

Numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ferrie Wilcher, her husbands, Thomas Edward Rushing and Thomas Lee Waller, a son, Uland Rushing, a daughter, Theresa Friend, and 2 brothers, Dennis and James Wilcher.

Graveside services will be Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniel Cemetery with Brother Chris Burke officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation is general.

Agnes Lenore Habeger, age 73, of Mena, passed away Friday, November 25, 2011 at her home.

She was born September 4, 1938 in Prescott, Arizona to the late William H. Hooker and the late Antoinette Downs. Ms. Habeger was a member of the Cherry Hill Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and friend.

Survivors are:

Ms. Habeger was sent for cremation. A memorial service will be Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Rodger Terrell officiating. Services are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

_Stephen Douglas Barney, age 75, of Cherry Hill, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. He was born on Tuesday, February 11, 1936 to Stephen Julius and Dorothy Ernestine Schlie Barney in Rockford, Illinois.

Stephen was a devout Christian and served his Lord at the Cherry Hill Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday school and was on the Building and Grounds Committee. He loved his family and his church family very much. In 1975, Stephen and his wife Carol moved to Cherry Hill from Belvidere, Illinois. Stephen retired from Woodward Governor to the family farm to raise cattle and chickens. Stephen loved learning; he constantly had a book open or was taking courses on a wide variety of topics. Some of Stephen’s hobbies included reading, astronomy, meteorology, woodworking, hunting, fishing and trapping. Stephen was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Carol Mae LaBuy Barney of the home; two sons and daughters in laws, Daniel Lee and Jody Barney of Huntsville, Alabama and Stephen Andrew and Joy Barney of Cherry Hill; two daughters, Sandra L. Ward of Monroe, Wisconsin and Jill Annette Cabello and husband Juan of Cherry Hill, four sisters, Rosalie Lewis of Sacramento, California, Patricia McCulley of Yocana, Helen Velmers of Cherry Hill and Merrie Lawrence of Marietta, Georgia; twelve grandchildren, Nathaniel Barney of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Allison Barney of Nashville, Tennessee, Adam Barney of Huntsville, Alabama, Jonathan Ward and Timothy Ward both of Monroe, Wisconsin, Misti Clark of Bryant, Arkansas, Phillip Savage of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Christopher Grimes of Rantoul, Illinois, Jordan Barney, Bethany Barney, Eden Barney and Keilah Barney all of Cherry Hill; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Cherry Hill Baptist Church with Brother Grant Geiger officiating. Interment will follow in the Cherry Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

Pallbearers will be Adam Barney, Jonathan Ward, Timothy Ward, Phillip Savage, Kevin Clark and Michael Floyd.

Perry Davis, age 77, of Mena, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2011 in Mena.

He was born July 6, 1934 in Howard County, Arkansas to the late Jewell Davis and the late Hester Tolliett Davis. He was united in marriage September 17, 1954 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Nona Fountain. Mr. Davis was a logger by profession but his passion was for music. Perry had a God given talent to play numerous musical instruments.

He was of the Pentecostal faith and a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.

Survivors are:

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cove Revival Center with Reverend Paul Rose officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cove under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Friday, November 25 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.


_Nancy Ann Lott
October 1, 1955 - November 22, 2011

_Nancy Ann Lott, age 56, of Springdale, Arkansas died Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at her home. She was born on Saturday, October 1, 1955, to Frank Woodruff Kadinger and Kathryn Louise Perkinson Kadinger in Valley Springs, South Dakota.

Nancy graduated high school from Widefield High in 1973 and instead of going to college she entered the United States Coast Guard in January of 1974. She served until 1978 and was a member of the very first Women’s Coast Guard. Nancy was an adventurer; she went skydiving, zip lining and was an expert pistol shooter. Some of her hobbies included crafting, going to flea markets, hunting and playing golf. Nancy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Nancy was a member of the Elm Springs Faith Regular Baptist Church in Elm Springs, Arkansas. Nancy will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn Kadinger.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Lott of Springdale; one daughter Sage Aubrey Cannon of Springdale; one son Joshua Lott of Mena; her father, Frank Kadinger of Security, Colorado; three brothers, Steve Kadinger of Aurora, Colorado, Richard Kadinger of Denver, Colorado and Mark Kadinger of Alamosa, Colorado; one sister, Laurie McCuen of Byers, Colorado; four grandchildren, Corbin Chavez of Springdale; Blake Ballard of Peoria, Illinois, Jayson Lott and KayLa Lott both of Mena; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at the Rock Springs Cemetery at Posey Hollow with Brother Kenny Posey officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 25, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Elm Springs Faith Regular Baptist Church in Elm Springs, Arkansas with Brother Gary Jewell officiating.

_Betty Ruth Smith, age 80, of Wickes, died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at her home. She was born on Monday, June 29, 1931 to William Walter and Mary Etta Adams Griffith in Henrietta, Texas.

Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and loved living life to the fullest. Betty was in law enforcement for 25 years as a Deputy Sheriff and Dispatch in Sevier County and Little River County. She was very proud of this accomplishment. Betty enjoyed the great outdoors and going fishing. She also enjoyed reading and watching her deer off her front porch.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Sam Sellers Jr.; her second husband Walter Cox; her third husband Robert Smith; one son Samuel Paul Sellers Sr.; one grandson Samuel Weston Green; eleven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Pamala Robbins and husband, Rodger of Grannis, Penny Kesterson and husband Bassil of Wickes and Barbara Manshack of Wickes; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A private graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Mountain Springs Resting Place, west of Grannis. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mena.

Pallbearers will be Bassil Kesterson, Paul Sellers, Brandon Courtney, Blake Reel, Austin Miller and Dood Baker.

Mrs. Sue “Cookie” Reynolds McKelvey, age 66, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in Little Rock.

She was born January 7, 1945 in Mena, Arkansas to the late Lemuel Reynolds and the late Thera Reeder Reynolds. She was united in marriage to Donald McKelvey. She was a truck driver as a recent profession, but worked at U.S. Motors for 11 years. She was also an EMT instructor for RMCC as well as and employee at Tyson Foods at Waldron. Mrs. McKelvey was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, niece and friend, and will be missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by:

Daughters: Kelly Lea Hackney of Mena, Arkansas Kimberly Gordon of Mena, Arkansas

Brother: Charles Reynolds of Mena, Arkansas

She was preceded in death by her parents, by 2 brothers, Tommy and Jerry Reynolds, and by a sister, Betty Jo Stowt.

Hughie W. Davis, age 57, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in Ft. Smith.

He was born February 16, 1954 in Mena, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haskell Davis and Delma Rosson Davis, and three brothers, Brant Davis, Richard Davis and Jerry Davis.

He is survived by his brothers, Gene Davis and his wife Lorraine of San Antonio, New Mexico; Bill Davis and wife Jeanie of Springerville, Arizona; and Frankie Davis and his wife Christine of Mena, Arkansas; two sisters, Ozella Chrisman of Waldron, Arkansas and Dolena Love and her friend Hershell Stroud of Mena, Arkansas.

Hughie loved to yo-yo and listening to music or just sitting on the porch swing or playing his banjo brought him much joy. He never met a stranger and would always have a smile and a hello for anyone and everyone. He loved parades and was a friend to all. He also loved to go for a hot fudge sundae, drive his golf cart, and especially loved his little dog, Sugar Baby. He was very special, and everyone loved him. We thank God for blessing our family with Hughie. In church he always wanted to sing, “I’ll Fly Away”. We know now that he has.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Drew Ratcliff officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be general.

Pallbearers will be Roger Bryan, Bobby Chrisman, Jeff Davis, Matt Davis, Russell Davis, and Doug Blair. Honorary pallbearers are Perry Dorr, Brett Dorr, Trea Blair and Zack Bryan.


_Morris "Coach" Dale Hodgson
May 27, 1936 - November 14, 2011

_Morris Coach Hodgson, age 75, of Mena died Monday, November 14, 2011 at the Mena Regional Health System. He was born on Wednesday, May 27, 1936 to Kenneth and Ella Russell Hodgson in DeKalb, Texas.

Morris began his athletic career at DeKalb High School in 1952. He was a four year letterman at DHS, and received an All-State Honorable Mention. Morris also was the light heavy weight AAU state boxing champion. After his high school career, Morris went to play football at New Mexico State University. He was selected as the top cornerback in the Border Conference in 1960. His 1960 team went undefeated and won the Border Conference. They won the Sun Bowl and finished ranked fifth and eleventh in the nation in two different polls.

Morris received a plaque from Vince Lombardi in 1967 in New York City for being part of the 1960 New Mexico State team. The team was inducted into the New Mexico State University Hall of Fame. Morris coached and served as assistant athletic director at New Mexico State University. But his most recent and most touching honor came in 2011, when Morris was inducted into the DeKalb Hall of Fame. Coach was a winner and gave 110% in everything he did in his life. Morris also served his country in the United States Navy as a Qualified Airman from 1955 to 1959.

Morris loved spending time with his family and working outside. He liked to work with his tractor and make improvements on the properties he owned. He enjoyed his dogs and watching the deer around his house. Morris loved fishing and the great outdoors. He also was an activist in many ways. He and his wife Marcia helped form the Southern Oklahoma Water Alliance to keep the State and other interested parties from damming up the Mountain Fork River, and a 10 year moratorium on the out-of-state sale of water resulted from their efforts. Morris also was Vice President of the We the People Tea Party and was very active in supporting his country. Morris was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mena.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia Hodgson of the home; one son, Jamie Hodgson of Clarksville, Texas; one sister, Edna Lamon of Clarksville, Texas; one granddaughter, Melissa Burkholder of Wichita, Kansas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. A service will be Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Bates Family Funeral Home Chapel in De Kalb, Texas at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be in the Woodman Cemetery in DeKalb, Texas.

Emra Kathryn (Kathy) Grant was born to William Thomas and Bernice Walker Tackett on November 2, 1955 in Sweet Home, Oregon. She went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus on November 14, 2011 at Texarkana, Texas at the age of 56 years and 12 days.

She was united in marriage to Billy Frank Grant, Sr. on September 28, 1974. They had one son, Billy Frank Grant,, Jr. She was a processor for 27 years at the Pilgrims Pride Processing Plant and was of the Nazarene Faith. She loved to go camping and fishing, and enjoyed cooking and crocheting and liked reading and doing puzzles. Kathy was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and was a friend to many. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband Billy Grant of DeQueen, Arkansas

Mother: Bernice Tatum of Gillham, Arkansas

Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday evening, November 17th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was born November 26, 1933 in Octavia, Oklahoma to the late Manassie “Bob” Lawrence and the late Ethel Linville Lawrence. Mrs. Hensley was a restaurant worker by trade and was of the Protestant faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

She was born March 5, 1941 in Wickes, Arkansas to the late Roy Lester Rose and the late Rita Elizabeth Hathaway Rose. She was united in marriage to the late Marvin Earl Milam on September 26, 1959. She was a poultry farmer and raised chickens for over 40 years for Tyson and was a member of the Wickes Pentecostal Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

She is survived by:

Graveside services will be Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Baker Cemetery at Wickes with Paul Rose and Brother Chris Burke officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday evening, November 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Phillip Rose, Tim Rose, Danny Johnson, Mitchell Tidwell, Larry Wilcher, and Rodney Provence. Honorary pallbearer is Kennith Rose.

Myrtie Stubblefield McLain, age 92, of Texarkana, Texas, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011.

She was born October 02, 1919, in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late James A. Stubblefield and the late Mitte Daily Stubblefield. Myrtie was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was a loving sister, aunt, and a friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by:

Nieces: Dixie McMullen and husband Dave of Nash, Texas Barbara Hodge of Mena, Arkansas

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mitte Stubblefield, her husband, Issac Munson McLain and son Charles McLain.

Susan Kay Bowen, age 55, of Smithville, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, November 7, 2011 in Ft. Smith.

She was born July 3, 1956 in Camden, Arkansas to Maurice Primm and the late Shirley Ann Hackler Primm. She was united in marriage to William E. Bowen on April 12, 1980. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Octavia Baptist Church. Mrs. Bowen got the most out of life, and loved cooking, fishing and riding four wheelers. Her biggest joy, however, was spoiling her grandkids, who, along with the rest of her family, will miss her every day.

She is survived by:

Husband: William E. Bowen of Smithville, Oklahoma

Son: Justin Wade Bowen of Smithville, Oklahoma

Daughter: Susan Denette Bowen of Mena, Arkansas

Grandsons: Hunter Wade Bowen of Smithville, Oklahoma Tanner “Bitty” Wade Bowen of Smithville, Oklahoma Briar Dean Taylor of Mena, Arkansas

Father: Maurice Primm of Mena, Arkansas

Sisters: Diane Smith of Ft. Smith, Arkansas Linda Rowe of Mena, Arkansas

Aunt: Pat Post of Kingsland, Arkansas

Uncles: Larry Primm of Maumelle, Arkansas Jerry Hackler of Shreveport, Louisiana

She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Ann Hackler Primm.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Octavia Baptist Church with Brother Ed Rogers officiating. Interment follows in Six Mile Cemetery under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation will be general.

Mr. Charles Russell “Rus” Venable, age 44, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Mena, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his home.

He was born January 7, 1967 in Mena, Arkansas to Charles Venable and Patsy Wright Venable. He was owner-operator of Massimo Furniture Store in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a loving son, brother, and friend and will be missed by those who knew him.

He is survived by:

Parents: Charles and Patsy Venable of Mena, Arkansas

Brother: Travis Venable of North Little Rock, Arkansas

And by countless friends and relatives.

Memorial services will be held Friday, November 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mena with Reverend Gary Harrison officiating.   Ms. Minnie Mae Ross, age 78, a resident of Mena, Arkansas died Monday, November 7, 2011 in Mena.

She was born November 29, 1932 in Lockesburg, Arkansas.  She was a former custodian at the Sevier County Courthouse and a member of the First Baptist Church in Cove, Arkansas.

Ms. Ross was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Georgia Tidd Ross; companion, Leon Smith and eight brothers and sisters.

She is survived by one daughter; Janet Darlene Smith Ross Westbrook Ernest and husband Douglas of Wichita, Kansas; one son, Lonnie Joe Ross of Mena, Arkansas; three granddaughters, Alisha Kay Westbrook Cardby and Melissa Renee Johnson both of Wickes and Mattie Joe Ross of Mena; four grandsons, Terry Allan Ross and John Henry Westbrook Johnson both of Wichita, Kansas and Wyatt John Ross and Weston Dale Ross both of Mena, Arkansas; one brother, Tommy Ross; two sisters, Elise Faye and Lillie Bell Harmon; 6 great-grandchildren, and a number of step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services for Ms. Ross will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2011 in the Redmen Cemetery in De Queen with Rev. Ron Ladd officiating.  Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 9th at the funeral home.    


Alexander Cole Masters

Alexander Cole Masters, age 21, of Mena died Thursday, November 3, 2011 at his home. He was born on Tuesday, June 26, 1990 to Timothy Glenn and Lisa Johnette Hughes Masters in Conroe, Texas.

Alex enjoyed life and lived life to the fullest. He graduated high school from North Lamar High School in Paris, Texas in 2008, where he played soccer. After graduating high school, he attended East Texas Baptist University, where he was a junior, majoring in Psychology. Alex was very active in his youth group at the First Baptist Church in Paris, Texas, where he went on several youth mission trips, including ones to New Orleans during the recovery of Hurricane Katrina, New York City, and Waco, Texas. Alex was passionate about his music and loved to play his guitar and keyboard. He was self taught and considered this to be one of his greatest accomplishments in life. He loved his family and had a special place in his heart for his niece and two nephews. Alex was a big fan of both the University of Texas and the University of Arkansas football teams. He also enjoyed going camping, fishing and playing his video games. Alex will be missed by all who knew him.

Alex is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Helen Masters and one uncle David Masters.

Survivors include his parents, Tim and Lisa Masters of Mena; one brother, Neal Del Rio Masters of Hot Springs; two sisters, Anna Masters of Rogers and Hillary Del Rio Williams and husband Greg of Owasso, Oklahoma; Paternal grandfather, T.C. Masters of Mena; his maternal grandparents, Johnny and Ann Hughes of Bastrop, Louisiana; uncles and aunts, Jerry and Karen Masters of Little Rock, Martin and Betty Gilbert of Fayetteville, Mike and Barbara Shepard of Mena, Martha Masters of Mena, Doug and Alma Hughes, Pat Hughes, Jane and Scotty Jones, Ben Hughes all of Bastrop, Louisiana, two nephews Truett Nieto of Rogers and Cohen Williams of Owasso, Oklahoma; one niece Clara Grace Williams of Owasso, Oklahoma; several cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be Monday, November 7, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Mena with Dr. David McCord and Brother Tony VanDerWilt officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Garden in Mena. Visitation will be Sunday, November 6, 2011from 2:00-5:00 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

Ruth S. Carey

Ruth S. Carey age 97 of Cove, died Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Mena Regional Health System.

She was born Sunday, December 7, 1913 in Colorado.

Ruth was a simple woman and enjoyed her life with her husband of 57 years, Ivan Carey. He precedes her in death, along with her parents.

She enjoyed listening to music and playing Bingo. She also enjoyed people visiting with her.

Mrs. Ruth was sent for cremation under the direction of Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. No services are planned at this time.

Louise Mabry Davis
(September 27, 1914 - November 1, 2011)

Louise Mabry Davis, age 97, a long time resident of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at her home.

She was born September 27, 1914 in Valliant, Oklahoma to the late George Mabry and the late Nita Cromwell Mabry. She was united in marriage to the late Carroll Glenn Davis on April 11, 1946 for 50 years. She was a schoolteacher for many years in Valliant and McAlester, Oklahoma and also in Hatfield, Arkansas. She and her husband were the owners of the Bogg Springs Bed and Breakfast. Mrs. Davis enjoyed many other activities, and was active as a Lioness and in her local Gardening Club. She was strong in her faith and was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a loving sister-in-law, cousin, and friend to many, and will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by:

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Nita Mabry, by her husband Carroll Glenn Davis, and by a brother and sister-in-law, J.P. and Mildred Mabry.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mena with Reverend Gary Harrison officiating. Interment follows in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Hatfield under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation will be general.

Pallbearers will be Drew Davis, Dwight Davis, Dirk Hamlen, Jack Mabry, Joe Mabry, and Jim Redman. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Gardner and Reynolds Gardner.
